If you didn’t already realize, we are watching an R rated movie in English class. The movie “shutter Island”, however lacks a substantial amount of nudity and language. Sure, the F word has been thrown around a few times, but the real reason for the rating spirals from “disturbing violent content”. I know Jillian blogged about how scared she felt while viewing the film, I have to conquer! Does that make me weird? I simply do not like “disturbing violent content”. We as a society have embraced and even glorified violence in the video games we play and in the most popular movies we watch. Even though violence on the screen has been known to spark the inspiration for countless murders and crimes, we allow it in school? So anyways, I did some research on violent films and found out exactly what they cause. The most common violent films and games cause anxiety, sleeplessness, phobia’s, and fear. But why so much aftermath, the movies are not even real! I had an interesting conversation with my mom about the matter and she said, “Everything imagined is inspired by something that already exists”. Our imaginations are amazing to combine things like people, vehicles, and robots in the making of transformers. What about the clown horror in the movie “it”? Furthermore, this idea made me question the reasoning for Shutter Island. Could the violence in our own society be what sparked the story line for Shutter Island? If so, I am more scared of the people around me than I am the movie itself. I also find it funny that the fear and sleeplessness Shutter Island has been causing me, is keeping me from completing my data sheet. Situation irony, or does Ms. Serensky just want us to suffer? I am however like the gaming goons, and am obsessed with finding out what happens in the end! Cannot wait to see!
Carly, I agree with you that violence is often glorified in the media. Video games, such as Grand Theft Auto, represent violence for the sake of violence. However, I think that in some cases violence in the media is used to make a point rather than encourage it. Much of the violence in Shutter Island involves Ted's flashbacks to WWII and the concentration camps. The violent images and multiple corpses are supposed to show the horrific consequences of violence. In this case, I think the violence is used to condemn violence rather than support it.
ReplyDeleteHi Carly! I totally agree with you that violence in movies and games cause negative side effects, but I believe that many of these effects come from news programs. I feel personally affected by these shows- I feel many, especially those in our generation, become extremely desensitized to violence. I watch the news every morning, and constantly see and hear of horrible things going on in the world around us. It makes this violence seem ordinary and society accepts this desensitizing through the creation of the games and movies you discussed.
